Descendants of Charles O’Neill of Gurteenroe, Aughadown

A: Charles O’Neill
I know little of Charles O’Neill. Griffiths Valuation of 1851 shows him occupying the O’Neill plot in Gurteenroe. Aughadown parish record show Charles O’Neill of Gurteenroe married to Mary Hourighan, having children in the 1820s. According to his great-granddaughter Evelyn Walsh Mountgomery, the family tradition was that Charles and Mary had seven children, one boy and six girls.
He had 7 children :

B.1: James O’Neill, married Catherine O’Driscoll (born 1833 in Goleen Marsh, died 1918, daughter of Daniel O’Driscoll and Nellie O’Sullivan).
He had 11 children :

C.1: Charles O’Neill, born in 1853, died the 18 September 1929, married Mary O’Donovan (born in 1866 in Lisheenapingina and died the 4 February 1963, daughter of Daniel O’Donovan and Catherine O’Mahony).
He had 9 children:

D.1: James (Jimmy) O’Neill, born in 1892, died the 11 February 1988, married Julia McCarthy, the 6 February 1940. James and Julia lived on the O’Neill homeplace in Gurteenroe. They were the last of the O’Neills to live there.
He had 1 child :

D.2: Kathleen O’Neill, born in 1894, died the 18 September 1978, married James Finn. The family lived in Knocknaraha, Church Cross.
She had 5 children :

E.1: David Vincent Finn, born the 9 April 1928, died the 29 January 1982.

E.2: Eleanor Finn, married Michael Óg Casey.

E.3: Marie Finn married Tadhg O’Connell.

D.3: Jerome O’Neill, born in 1895, died the 13 July 1971, married Hannah Shanahan in 1917.

D.7: Pat O’Neill, born in 1899, died the 15 May 1978. Pat never married and lived in Gurteenroe with his brother James.

D.8: May O’Neill, born in 1901, died the 19 May 1991, married Patrick Caverly of Kilcoe, the 17 February 1942.

D.9: Joe O’Neill, born in 1903, died the 27 December 1978, married Annie McCarthy.

C.2:  James O’Neill, born 1855.

C.3: Mary O’Neill, born in 1856, married Jeremiah Crowley, the 23 February 1879. Jeremiah died in suspicious circumstances while returning from Skibbereen in his horse and cart. The family lived in Mohonagh, Church Cross.
She had 3 children :

D.1: John Crowley, born in 1880. John emigrated to England. The family tradition is that he became a Labour Party activist and that he worked with Keir Hardie on the party newspaper.

D.2 : Kate Crowley, born in 1882, married a Donovan.
She had 2 children :

E.1: May Donovan, married Tim McCarthy .

D.3: Jeremiah Crowley, born in 1885.

C.4: Ellen O’Neill, born the 12 June 1858, married Thomas Daly, the 5 March 1889. The
Daly’s lived in Lisheen, all the children except John and Margaret emigrated to the USA.
She had 7 children :

D.1: John Daly, born in 1890. John never married and lived in the Daly homeplace in Lisheen.

D.2: Margaret Daly, born in 1891, married Daniel O’Regan in 1917.

D.3: James Daly, born in 1894, married Bridget Shanahan in 1928 in the USA.

D.4: Thomas Daly, born in 1896, married Kathleen Whooley in 1935 in the USA.

D.5: Kathleen Daly, born in 1897.

D.6: Patrick Daly, born in 1899.

D.7: Charles Daly, born in 1901, married Mary Ferriter in 1938 in the USA.

C.5: Daniel O’Neill, born 1860, died 1891, married Ellen Caverly. A cooper by trade, Daniel lived in Skibbereen. He died at a young age.
He had 3 children :

D.1: Annie O’Neill, married Paddy O’Connell.

D.2: Eillie O’Neill, married a Donegan.

D.3: Kathleen O’Neill, married Peter Fury.

C.6: Nora O’Neill, born the 4 April 1863, married James O’Neill (son of James O’ Neill and Bridget O’ Neill), died 7 Jan 1945. James O’Neill’s branch of the O’Neills were known as the Bossy Neills. The Bossy Neills were also from Gurteenroe. James, Nora and family moved from Gurteenroe to Coppeen in the early 1900s and from there they all immigrated to New Zealand. The first to emigrate from Ireland to New Zealand was their son James, cicra 1909. Nora and James were among the last to leave in 1922. In New Zealand they lived in “Coopers” cottage in Te Wera on the North Island.
She had 10 children :

D.1: James O’Neill, born in 1891, died 1963,  married Eileen Bilmer. During World War I James joined the New Zealand army. This decision was not  popular among the rest of his family.

D.2: Bridget (Birdie) O’Neill, born in 1893, married Charles O’Neill (son of Michael O’Neill and Ellen O’Neill) , the 13 June 1917, died 1982.  Birdie and her brother Charles sailed to New Zealand in 1914 on the day World War 1 was declared. Charles father Michael originally came from Ringarogy Island near Baltimore, Co Cork and immigrated to NZ circa 1877. His mother Ellen was a sister to Birdie’s father James. Michael and Ellen were among the first pioneers to settle in the Te Wera district.
She had 3 children :

E.1: Charles Morgan O’Neill. Morgan served as a pilot with the NZ Air Force during World War 2. He was awarded the US Air Medal for Meritorious Service for his actions during the war in the Pacific.

E.3: Terence O’Neill. Terence was a Catholic Priest.

D.3: Charles O’Neill, born in 1894, married Annie Ford in 1922, died 1959

E.1: Martin O’Neill born the 14 September 1923, married Daphne Helen Orbell on the 15 October 1947, died the 7 January 1994.

E.2: Patrick O’Neill, born the 7 March 1927, married Dorothy Mason on the 14 August 1954, died the 25 December 1990.

D.5: Eily Kate O’Neill, born the 12 May 1897, died 1981. Eily Kate was nun in the order of the Sisters of the Mission. Her religious name was Sr. Kevin.

D.6: Nora O’Neill, born in 1901, married Dan Mouat in 1926, died1978. The Mouats ran a general store in Te Wera, NZ for many years.
She had 9 children :

E.4: Bernadette O’Neill. Bernadette is nun in the order of the Sisters of the Mission. Her religious name was Sr. Mary-Clair

D.9: Mary Anne O’Neill, born 18 April 1908, married Ralph Death in 1933, died 1995. No children

D.10: Kitty O’Neill, born  18 April 1908, married Leonard Coley in 1936, died 1988

C.7: Catherine O’Neill, born in 1865. Died in childhood.

C.8: Pat O’Neill, born in 1867. This name is unknown to anyone living. It is probable that he died in infancy.

C.9: Jerry O’Neill, born in 1868, married Bridget Moynihan Jerry was a teacher he moved to County Offaly.

C.11: Annie O’Neill, born in 1873, died 23 March 1968, married William Walsh of Goleen Marsh. Annie was a national school teacher and taught for a time in Kilcoe N.S.
She had 6 children :

D.1: Timothy Walsh, born in 1905, died in infancy.

D.2: Evelyn Walsh, born in 1906, died in 1992, married Charles Montgomery,
the 1 February 1936 in New York. They lived in Bergenfield, New Jersey.
She had 4 children:

D.3: Patrick Walsh, born in 1908, married Mary Murphy, the 19 September 1939, died 1977.

The Yankee Neills
This O’Neill family also lived in Gurteenroe. They were closely related to our O’Neills but I have not been able to find the connection.

A.1: Charles O’Neill, married Bridget Shanahan, the 24 February 1852.
He had 7 children :

B.1: James O’Neill, born in 1855.

B.2: Norah O’Neill born 1856, died 26 January 1936. Norah, James and Charles never married. They remained in Gurteenroe. Norah was the last to die and hence was the last of the Yankee Neills to live in Gurteenroe.

B.3: Denis O’Neill, born in 1858.

B.4: Ellen O’Neill, born in 1859.

B.5: Charles O’Neill, born in 1861.

B.6: Mary O’Neill, born in 1865.
